Over my career as an insurance agent my district manager would gather agents to discuss their ideas about writing more business. Many good ideas were presented. Often after an agent gave his tip someone would ask, “Are you still doing it?” Frequently, the answer was no. When asked why they would tell about something that came up to get them off track.
Unexpected things happen in life. I know that. Something will crop up that needs my full attention now. The important routines are pushed aside for the urgent. Two strategies have helped me with this.
I have a narrow definition of urgent. Urgent means something clearly important that needs to be dealt with immediately. That filters out many potential urgent situations, which are really just distractions in disguise.
When something truly urgent comes up I handle it with the idea that this is taking me away from something that is important. That makes it easier to get back to the important routines as soon as possible, so they continue to be a habit. It’s a simple thing to do, but has paid huge dividends over the years. I relate to what Warren Buffet said. “We don’t have to be smarter than the rest. We just have to be more disciplined than the rest.” Nothing more complicated than perception.
May you have enough today, one moment at a time.
