Father’s day is one of my favorite holidays, mostly because I like being a daddy so much. My wife and daughters have done many things to make it special. Right now I’m going to mention Fathers Day 2014. My favorite basketball team, the San Antonio Spurs, were playing the Miami Heat in the NBA finals. If the Spurs won, they would be the champions. My daughters know basketball very well and watched the entire game with me.
That in and of itself was terrific, but what made it even more special was the way the Spurs played. It was the most beautiful, brilliant, unselfish basketball I’ve ever seen. Here’s a video showing how that team played. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3y7cWmoBCIThe most telling line was coach Pop saying he gets to coach “a great group of people who have gotten over themselves.” The results were indeed beautiful.
For the last several years I’ve really had one goal, to get out of my own way, or as Pop put it, get over myself. That took me several different places internally. Lee Jampolsky’s book, Smile for No Good Reason, started me down this path. Eckhardt Tolle’s book, A New Earth, made the path more clear. They gave me information about what Ego really is. My real self is beyond Ego.
It reminded me of something I learned in a business law class. Real Property is defined as land. It is permanent and can’t be destroyed. It endures. Personal Property is items people own, like cars, phones, and clothes. These things are add ons, and by their nature temporary. Ego is like personal property. It’s an add on, busy trying to enhance itself with temporary things like accomplishments and items to own. However, no matter how much it adds, it will never be enough. Its nature is to be dissatisfied and always want more. My real self doesn’t need any add ons. It’s enough.
I learned this concept by reading and thinking, through thought. I came to know this with meditation, beyond thought. In the stillness of meditation it’s only my real self, which is enough. There is no need or room for add ons. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside you.”
The Spurs played free, unselfish basketball that Father’s Day. Nobody was seeking the spotlight. No add ons were needed. When you glow from within, there’s no need for a spotlight. Mostly I’ve gotten out of my own way, and life has become beautiful. My life isn’t perfect, but life doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. Nothing more complicated than perception.
May you have enough today, one moment at a time.
