I like to think of myself as a student of life. I’ve done a lot of reading to understand life better and have come across a great deal of important wisdom. However, one of the most important things I’ve learned came from a rather random comment by my friend Mike. We were discussing a topic on which we disagreed. That happens often with Mike and I. Then he laid this pearl of wisdom on me. “Surely you know there is no objective reality. Everything is perspective.”
It was late at night and we’d had a long day, but I knew his statement was profound. It reminded me of a scene from the movie Dead Poets Society when Robin Williams’ character stood on his desk to show the students the importance of perspective. He said, “We must constantly look at things in a different way.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6vCq6YcLeU
In my very first post I mentioned a scene from another Robin Williams movie Patch Adams, where Arthur urged Robin’s character to “look beyond the fingers.” How many fingers do you see? With that in mind I’ll be writing a series of posts regarding different perspectives which have helped me “dare to strike out and find new ground.” As my friend Mike said, “Everything is perspective.”
May you have enough today, one moment at a time
Really interesting and I watched the Robin Williams scene and see great value in what he was trying to teach. This said, on the other side of the coin, we must, I believe, trust that there IS objective reality. To deny this puts one in great danger I think. For example, if one doesn’t really believe in the objective reality of the stars in the sky, we won’t bother to go there.
