We all know the golden rule, “In everything do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the law and the prophets.” Matthew 7:12. I am responsible for my actions by treating others the way I like to be treated. Taking that one step further, I do my best to see things from the other person’s point of view. They may want to be treated differently that I would. I talk about this in my post Bird Brain.
To me, what Jesus doesn’t say also helps make the rule truly golden. He does not say that I am responsible for the happiness of others. That lies in their minds. Stoic philosophy emphasizes focusing on things over which I have control. I have control of my actions, being kind, and how I think. I do not have control over the reactions of others. I do the best I can with the information I have in the present moment. I think that’s what Jesus was talking about. Nothing more complicated than perception.
May you have enough today, one moment at a time.
