Mom Was Right

I’ve mentioned the influence my Dad had on me in many of my posts. I was lucky enough to have an amazing Mom too. One of her more common sayings was, “You’ll get used to it.” That often was regarding a food I didn’t care for, but it also applied to other things in my life.

She was right. Over the years I’ve found I can adapt to many things l come across. It’s been a real benefit, particularly in turning something I didn’t want to do into a habit, because it was good for me. If I did it enough I got used to it. Important things are seldom accomplished by one terrific act. The power of consistency is usually involved.

As with many things in life, routine is a double edged sword. I can become accustomed to something detrimental as easily as something beneficial. That applies to habits, and also conditions in my life that need to change, but are left unaddressed. That’s because they are familiar and allowed to linger.

It’s good for me to examine parts of my life from time to time to see if they match up to what I want to be about. It doesn’t matter that I’m making good time, if I’m on the wrong road. Before I know it a deep chasm can develop. Alexis Carrel said, “ Life leaps like a geyser to those who drill through the rock of inertia.” That starts with checking where the status quo is taking me.

Mom was very wise. It’s true that I can get used to things and sometimes that’s helpful. Sometimes not so much. Nothing more complicated than perception. By the way, I never got used to the taste of liver.

May you have enough today, one moment at a time.
