I learned a lot owning my own insurance agency. One of the most important lessons was to never guarantee anything over which I didn’t have direct control. We had high standards at my office and the company I represented provided quality service. However, once something was out of my hands things were less certain. I became deliberate in telling clients what I would do for them, but not the actions of others.
The same is true where opinions are involved. Once I recommended a shrimp dish at a favorite restaurant. My friend tried it and was less than impressed. Now I soften all suggestions that are a matter of taste and almost everything is a matter of taste. That applies to products and services. I often use the disclaimer, in my opinion.
In my post Magic Words, I talked about what I know and what I don’t know. I don’t know exactly what other people will do, even if I have dealt with them before. In A Pearl I quoted my friend Mike. “Surely you know there is no objective reality. Everything is perspective.” Guaranteeing what others will do or how they will perceive something is trouble waiting to happen.
How I interact with others is similar to the way I interact with the rest of my life. The things that happen to me are somewhat predictable, but nothing is guaranteed. The only thing under my control are my own thoughts, so that’s all I guarantee, not the satisfaction of others. Nothing more complicated than perception.
May you have enough today, one moment at a time.
