Shoot First

Coaching basketball is complex. There are many skills to master, ball handling, passing, rebounding, defense and playing as a team to name a few. A team can be great at all these things, but they amount to nothing if you don’t score. Your team has to make shots. That’s why the first thing we did in practice after warm ups, was practice shooting. I always have time for what I put first.

Like most adults, I have a to-do list to manage my day. Otherwise it’s easy for it to get away from me. I almost always have more things to do on my list than time to do them, even after retiring. What should come first? What is the priority?

An extensive psychological study was done in America over a seventy year period. When interviewed the director of the study said this. Tell me the quality of your relationships and I’ll tell you the quality of your life. That is certainly the case for me.

I’ve found micro connections are powerful too. I do my best to strike up a conversation with others I encounter during the day. Even service people on the phone. It’s life’s little lagniappe. That’s a cajun word for a little something extra. I have to be purposeful about it, but I’m usually glad I did.

Stuff is just stuff that needs tending. My value isn’t dependent on my accomplishments. Connecting with others is what consistently makes me happy. It’s worth putting it first. Nothing more complicated than perception.

May you have enough today, one moment at a time.
