Cycling is my favorite form of exercise. However, after being an insurance agent and having a strong six wing on the enneagram I believe in safety first. Most of my time is spent on the hike and bike trail. Even so I still wear a white t-shirt because white stands out the most. Car drivers aren’t used to looking for cyclists, so I wear something that will get their attention. I explained this to my daughters. Once our youngest daughter told me she was going to go for a walk, but started heading for her room. I asked why and she said to put on a white t-shirt. I was so pleased.
With the same reasoning in mind, I only considered cars that had the highest safety rating when it was time for my daughters to drive. Whenever they would leave I had the same ritual. I would hug them, tell them I love them and say, “I only want one thing, you home safely.” I was reminding them that was the most important thing. Everything else was secondary.
When I was starting the girls basketball program at a local charter school I was full of ideas. I was telling my wife about them at the supper table. Then she said to me, that’s all well and good, but you need to remember the parents really don’t care how many games you win. They want to know one thing, that their daughter is ok. I looked at her and said, you’re exactly right. From then on everything with the basketball team was about the girl’s well being. That included playing well. A player’s well being goes out the window if you play the game poorly.
This all matches up with what I told the girls from the time they were able to understand. The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. Being able to identify what is most important in a situation and apply my efforts accordingly has been a big blessing. It helps bring more of what I want into my life. That doesn’t mean always being serious. Sometimes the main thing is to have fun, daydream, be silly and enjoy life.
May you have enough today, one moment at a time.
