Overrated

Being a five on the Enneagram I’ve always liked gathering information. I would sit and read the encyclopedia when I was a kid. I like shows about nature and science. I find them interesting. I’ve noticed that the producers of those shows usually go out of their way to provide dramatic tension. After talking about an animal for a while they will show it in some perilous situation. In shows about astronomy, heavenly bodies will be described with sinister human qualities. Destruction will always be looming somehow. They add drama where there isn’t any.

I define drama as artificial excitement. It is created by people. I’m not talking about sporting events or other inherently exciting situations in which people find themselves. Drama almost always has to do with hurt feelings. Someone’s identity is threatened in some way or they aren’t getting what they want. In either instance it comes down to selfishness, which has its roots in feeling as if I am not enough. See The Big Secret

It’s been my experience that drama almost never leads to anything positive. It is a type of poison that I should avoid. I do that in two ways. I practice doing the things I have found that remind me I am enough. Also I steer clear of drama when I see it arising in someone else. Strong drama needs participation by others. I can choose not to. That also includes not watching media that promotes drama.

I like having some exciting things in my life. Drama isn’t one of them. I find it overrated.

May you have enough today, one moment at a time.
