I Don’t Care

Many things surprised me about raising children. It’s a very interesting experience to start from scratch with a human being. We made it a point not to  watch television much. If we did it was usually a ball game. From about the time the girls could put sentences together they would have the same question. Who are we for? It seemed an innate quality for them to choose a side.

That always amazed me. Then I read a quote from Marcus Aurelius. “We have the power to hold no opinion about a thing and to not let it upset our state of mind-for things have no natural power to shape our judgments.”  It seems as though most of the world wants me to have an opinion about almost everything. That’s even the case if it has no bearing on my life or if I have little knowledge about the situation.

Here’s an example. I heard about a popularity poll taken on public figures. American politicians were included, but so was the British royal family. I need to understand American politics to be able to vote in an informed manner. The British royal family is completely irrelevant to my life. Having an opinion about them means nothing to me.

Under the fifth amendment to the constitution I can reserve the right not to testify against myself in court. I have determined I can claim the right not to have an opinion about any matter I so choose. I don’t have to get caught up in all the junk the world throws my way. That leaves so much more time and energy to focus on the things I really care about and will make a difference in my life. The noise in my life has been dialed way down. It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I just keep quoting Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive. “I don’t care.”https://www.google.com/search?q=i+don%27t+care+scene+from+the+fugitive&rlz=1CALAYK_enUS986US986&oq=i+don%27t&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i64j69i57j46i67i395i408i424i433i650j0i67i395i650j46i67i395i408i424i433i650j0i67i395i650l2.35316090j1j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:dfb52340,vid:OoTbXu1qnbc

May you have enough today, one moment at a time.

  1. I’m amazed at your ability to remember things and your technical expertise to pull up excerpts from movies.

I agree that I am from time to time asked to have an opinion from one side of the ideological spectrum or the other. Those asking these questions find it confusing if I say I see some truch in both points of view and on some issues, I too just “don’t care.” I frequently just say, “I’m a fierce independent,” but sadly, they don’t like that answer either. We all need to learn to say something about “I find truth in both and error as well.” Or “I like his comment AND I like yours too.” Drives some folks nuts.
