In my last post, Just the Facts, I talked about rebounding by getting the facts, analyzing them, coming to a decision and acting upon that decision. I’ve found that sometimes the decision I’ve reached is something I don’t want any part of. Following through with it is going to stink. That could be for a variety of reasons. I really hate being in that situation, but I’ve found something that helps. It’s a quote from Jerzy Gregorek, “Hard choices, easy life. Easy choices, hard life.”
Back in the 1970s there was a commercial for Fram oil filters. The mechanic talked about the cost of buying an oil filter now or having expensive car repairs. His classic line was, “You can pay me now, or pay me later.” https://www.google.com/search?q=fram+oil+filter+commercial+pay+me+now+or+pay+me+later&rlz=1CALAYK_enUS986US986&oq=fram+oil+filter+commercial+pay+me+now+or+pay+me+later&aqs=chrome..69i57j0i390l4.29662j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:0f3e43cf,vid:OHug0AIhVoQ
Acting upon what I know is the right thing to do, will pay off in the long run. If I don’t I’ll be paying the price for my inaction many times over. My Dad used to say that dragging out something unpleasant was like cutting off a dog’s tail one inch at a time. If I don’t act, there will be no end to the unpleasantness.
When I was coaching I would tell my team, “You can do everything right in a basketball game, but if you don’t put the ball in the basket it doesn’t matter.” I can analyze how best to rebound from a situation until the cows come home. Without action it doesn’t matter. “Hard choices, easy life. Easy choices, hard life.” It’s that simple.
May you have enough today, one moment at a time.
